A suspect was fatally shot by law enforcement during an attempted arrest in Clallam County on Monday afternoon, according to Port Angeles Police Department. The incident occurred as officers from the Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team (OPNET), the Port Angeles Police Department, and the Clallam County Sheriff's Office were trying to apprehend a man wanted on a U.S. Marshals warrant for assault. According to KOMO News, a foot pursuit ensued when the situation escalated.
During the pursuit, the man allegedly produced what seemed to quickly become a handgun, which prompted officers to discharge their firearms. FOX 13 Seattle reported that the Port Angeles Deputy Police Chief Jason Viada confirmed the events, stating the suspect "appeared to pull out a handgun." The man was subsequently shot and later transported from the scene by ambulance.
No officers were reported injured in the incident. The authorities emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public. As per standard procedure following such events, the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations is looking into the shooting. This was further confirmed by reporting from KIRO 7, who noted the independent review currently underway.
