Law enforcement officials in Oklahoma City have successfully taken into custody Martell D. Haire, who was wanted in connection with a Milwaukee triple shooting that resulted in the death of 16-year-old Marquis Champion on October 20, near 79th and Hampton. According to a statement obtained by the City of Milwaukee's website, Haire fled immediately post-shooting to evade arrest.
The arrest marks the end of a search for Haire, who is now facing charges from the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office, including one count of First-Degree Reckless Homicide, Use of a Dangerous Weapon, among other charges. These stem from the incident that not only claimed Marquis's life but also left two of his peers seriously wounded but recovering. Haire, if convicted, could potentially have to serve up to 141 years and 6 months in prison and could be fined to the tune of $250,000. This development is seen as a significant step forward for the grief-stricken family seeking closure and for the community at large.
The news of Haire's capture was met with a wave of relief from the family of the victims and community members. "Getting the suspect in custody is a huge relief to me and to my family, as well as to the loved ones of the two young men who were shot," the victim's uncle was quoted in the statement. The due diligence and efforts of the U.S. Marshals and Oklahoma officers who apprehended Haire were recognized and appreciated by the bereaved family. Furthermore, they expressed their gratitude towards the parties involved in the dissemination of information leading to the arrest, including Crime Stoppers and law firm Hupy and Abraham, not forgetting the coverage by CBS 58's Amanda Porterfield, according to the City of Milwaukee's website.
As the case now transitions to the legal arena, the victim’s family underlines their anticipation of justice being served. "We look forward to the criminal justice system bringing the justice that Marquis and the other two victims in this case so clearly deserve," they expressed. The community hopes to see the judicial process not only hold Haire to account for his alleged offenses but also to possibly prevent him from any potential to further harm to society.
