
Mesa police say Justin Merritt, 42, was found deceased inside his vehicle on U.S. 60 near Gold Canyon on Tuesday, prompting a temporary closure of the highway in both directions. Merritt had been wanted for serious felonies, including offenses involving children, according to ABC15.

After Merritt refused to cooperate, a SWAT team was deployed to negotiate his surrender. Officers later found Merritt deceased in his vehicle on U.S. 60 near Gold Canyon, with a handgun in the driver’s seat. Authorities say the death appears to be self-inflicted.
Witnesses reported heavy police activity during the incident. Daniel Connell, one of those present, told 12 News that there were numerous gunshots and described traffic coming to a sudden stop as undercover officers blocked a truck and drew their weapons.
Daniel Connell described being caught in the chaos as traffic abruptly stopped and officers drew their weapons. Amid the perceived gunfire, he contacted his mother to let her know what was happening and that he was safe on the ground by his car.
The Mesa Police Department’s homicide unit is leading the investigation into Merritt’s death. Officials said further updates on the case and any related road closures will be provided as the inquiry continues.
