The city of Tacoma has recently showcased its dedication to cultural enrichment through the Tacoma Creates initiative, which has, for another year, extended its reach and impact on the Tacoma community. The 2024-2025 Annual Report from Tacoma Creates highlights the program's efforts to provide expansive access to arts, culture, heritage, and science, marking a milestone in their community engagement.

According to the City of Tacoma report, Tacoma Creates distributed a hefty $6 million to 69 non-profit organizations in the area. These funds have proven to be a boon for cultural programs and events, enabling nearly 1,500 cultural activities to sprout up for the enjoyment and enhancement of the local community. Mayor Victoria Woodards emphasized the importance of Tacoma Creates in an interview: "Tacoma Creates funding helps cultural organizations build long-term sustainability and increase access to their programs.”

The focus on education is prominent, with over a third of the programs targeting youth education. In coordination with Tacoma Public Schools, Tacoma Creates-funded organizations have delivered programming to all levels of the local school system. This included funding transportation for 280 cultural field trips, potentially transforming routine school days into adventures of discovery for students from 3rd to 7th grade.

Local libraries also benefited from the cultural surge, hosting nearly 250 presentations and workshops thanks to Tacoma Creates-supported programs. These events, free of charge, attracted community members of all ages, demonstrating the inclusive nature of the initiatives backed by the funding. And with nearly 70 percent of the events free to the public, the accessibility of these cultural experiences speaks to Tacoma Creates' commitment to community-wide enrichment.

The breadth of Tacoma Creates' support is evident in the geographical spread of its programs. With over 60 percent of funded activities taking place outside the city’s downtown area, the organization has made strides in bringing culture to the neighborhoods. This decentralized approach has paid dividends in participation, as evidenced by the attendance of more than 300,000 people at free, in-person cultural events. It's clear that Tacoma is not just talking about increasing cultural access—it's doing it, with an interactive map available for the public to see just how far the reach extends.

As Tacoma embraces yet another successful year of Tacoma Creates, the numbers and stories threading through the 2024-2025 Annual Report are not just statistics—they are a testament to a city's unwavering commitment to nurturing the creative heartbeats of its community.
