Las Vegas has been left reeling from a horrific 12-vehicle pileup that occurred on November 18, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to multiple others. The tragic event unfolded on W. Cheyenne Avenue near N. Jones Blvd, with law enforcement citing excessive speed and failure to brake as contributing factors in the collision. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) reported, as per Hoodline, that the Infiniti G37, driven by 19-year-old Jose Gutierrez, did not slow for the stopped traffic at the red light, leading to the crash.
In the aftermath of the crash, Jose Gutierrez stands accused of multiple serious charges, including two counts of murder and an attempted murder charge. Gutierrez's initial court appearance was on Friday, after being hospitalized due to injuries from the crash. As reported by FOX5 Vegas, his attorney requested to postpone the bail hearing, meaning Gutierrez will remain in custody without bail until at least November 25. District Attorney Steve Wolfson outlined, "All indications are there was no braking before the collision," suggesting intentional conduct might be at play.
The LVMPD emphasizes road safety in the wake of such incidents, urging drivers to "slow down, stay alert, and drive responsibly" after this year's traffic fatalities in the city reached a dismal figure of 144. Moreover, emergency services responded promptly, and the injured were transported to medical facilities, reports Hoodline.
According to News 3 LV, Wolfson stated, "Therefore, we believe based on all of the evidence to date, including a very descriptive video, that his actions were intentional," in reference to the actions of Gutierrez. Notably, these allegations come independent of evidence indicating drug or alcohol influence. The collision not only resulted in the death of Gutierrez's passenger, 20-year-old Adilene Duran Rincon, but also another motorist, 38-year-old Edward Garcia. A third person also sustained life-threatening injuries, elaborated Wolfson after Gutierrez walked into the courtroom for the newly levied allegations.
While the city mourns and the community grapples with the aftermath of the crash, the legal proceedings continue to unfold. Gutierrez now faces a high-stakes legal battle, with his actions scrutinized under the harsh light of potential intent and malice. In the face of such grave accusations, the LVMPD's investigation presses on to bring clarity to this chaotic and distressing series of events.
