Harbor Area police officers were on extra patrol late last week when a confrontation with a teenager led to the use of a K9 unit and subsequent hospitalization of the young individual. According to a statement from the LAPD, on November 18, at around 11:45 p.m., Gang Enforcement Detail officers spotted a 16-year-old with what appeared to be a gun on Belle Porte Avenue and Anaheim Street. The situation escalated when the teen allegedly ran from the officers chasing him, resulting in a wider perimeter being set and a K9 search being initiated after he failed to comply with the announcements for surrender.
The deployment of the K9 followed several warnings issued through a Public Address system, urging the Subject to give himself up. Despite these repeated calls for surrender, "The Subject failed to comply," as detailed in the initial report by the LAPD. Officers eventually discovered him by a detached garage, where the injury occurred during the K9 contact.
