When a microburst tore through Tempe, leaving destruction in its path, it was the Tempe Resilience Hub Network that shone brightly against the calamity. According to a recent update, the network's three resilience hubs, which include community centers and places of worship, played crucial roles in the emergency response, hosting a backup shelter and a disaster assistance center to support the affected residents. The Desert Palm Resilience Hub, Community Christian Church Resilience Hub, and Dayspring Resilience Hub stepped into the fray, showcasing the effectiveness of the resilience hub model in times of crisis.
The value of these hubs, as reported by a newsletter from the City of Tempe, lies not only in their immediate response but also in the strong foundation of preparation and community relationship-building laid since 2022. Despite the immense challenge posed by the microburst, which impacted over a thousand homes and numerous businesses, the Hub Network's preparation allowed for a swift mobilization of resources and services. From providing shelter for disaster relief teams to stacking debris for pickup, the hubs' actions were a testament to years of meticulous planning.
Continuing with their mandate to foster community resilience, the Dayspring Resilience Hub is innovating with a new pilot program. Launching in Spring 2026, this initiative aims to map neighborhood assets by going door-to-door, identifying resources from skills to equipment that can be harnessed in future disruptions. In a statement obtained by the City of Tempe newsletter, the program's goal is to create a comprehensive map to better prepare and respond to any such occurrences.
The Tempe community is encouraged to learn more about these efforts and get involved. The next workshop is slated for Nov. 16 at the Dayspring United Methodist Church, where residents can delve into the process of asset mapping and volunteer for the upcoming initiative. For those interested in participating as a resilience hub or contributing resources to the network, the City of Tempe is welcoming involvement through its Tempe Resilience Hub Interest Form.
