The Lone Star State continues to bolster its workforce through strategic investment, as Governor Greg Abbott announces a substantial Skills Development Fund (SDF) grant award for Texarkana College. More than $805,000 will be funneled into providing tailored training to over 335 current and incoming workers at Graphic Packaging International, aimed at fortifying the high-demand paper manufacturing sector in Texas.
"Texas invests in hardworking Texans to ensure that our state remains the economic engine of the nation," Governor Abbott said. According to the Office of the Texas Governor's official statement, the grant aims to equip employees with the necessary skills to not only enhance their careers but also drive the growth of paper manufacturing. The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) was praised by the Governor for its collaboration with Texarkana College to create better job and paycheck opportunities for Texans.
As reported by the Office of the Texas Governor, TWC Chairman Joe Esparza highlighted the transformative impact of such grants. "Skills Development Fund grants open pathways to prosperity for local businesses and their workforce," he remarked. The customized training provided through this initiative is expected to significantly benefit the workforce in the paper manufacturing field.
The awards were presented during a ceremony at Texarkana College’s McCulloch Industrial Technology Center, where TWC Commissioner representing the Public, Brent Connett, handed off the accolades to representatives from the college and Graphic Packaging International. The SDF is a state-sponsored workforce training program that has, since its inception in 1996, provided opportunities in partnership with over 4,900 employers to upgrade or support job creation for more than 435,000 jobs across Texas.
Texarkana College and Graphic Packaging International are the latest beneficiaries of a scheme that showcases the state's commitment to not only invest in its industries but also to actively prepare its workforce to meet evolving industry demands with high-level skills and training. This collaborative approach between educational institutions and businesses reflects a shared understanding of the economic imperatives that drive the state forward.
