A damaged utility pole and a separated high-voltage line knocked out electricity to more than 10,000 homes and businesses across Arden-Arcade yesterday, briefly throwing parts of Swanston Estates and nearby blocks into the dark. Crews spent the midday hours securing the scene and restoring service, and many customers saw the lights come back on in about an hour. Before the full outage hit, neighbors reported flickering power and traded updates on local message boards.
Pole failure on Ethan Way
Dispatch logs reviewed by The Sacramento Bee show that a high-voltage line separated from a pole on the 2400 block of Ethan Way in the Swanston Estates neighborhood, just inside the Sacramento city limits. According to the paper, the outage began around 11:45 a.m., and no injuries were reported. A SMUD spokesperson told the outlet the outage stemmed from damaged equipment and that “a pole is down” while troubleshooters headed to the scene.
SMUD reports the scale of the outage
SMUD estimated that about 10,287 customers lost power at the peak of the outage and said electricity for some customers was restored within roughly an hour. The utility urged residents to rely on its outage map and online reporting tools for live updates and estimated restoration times.
Neighborhoods affected
The disruption rippled across several Arden-Arcade neighborhoods, with the heaviest impact reported in and around Swanston Estates and the Ethan Way corridor, according to dispatch records and utility updates. Portions of Ethan Way were closed while line crews worked on the damaged equipment and emergency responders monitored the area.
Why a single pole can darken a neighborhood
Even a single failed pole can leave thousands of customers without power because of how electrical circuits and distribution lines are arranged, especially in denser residential areas. SMUD's prior updates on storm-related grid damage note that replacing poles and handling complex repairs often requires coordination among multiple crews and can take several hours, which shows how quickly a localized hardware problem can spread across the wider network.
What residents should do
If you encounter downed power lines, stay well back, keep others away, and call 911 immediately. Do not try to move the lines or anything in contact with them. For outage reports and service updates, use SMUD's outage map or online tools and follow directions from local emergency officials.
SMUD crews worked to restore power and secure the affected area, and utility officials said they will continue investigating what caused the hardware to fail. This story will be updated if SMUD or city officials release additional information about the outage or repair timeline.
