In a disquieting incident, a baby boy estimated to be 5-8 months old was found deceased within the confines of a bag hidden under a heap of leaves in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Canarsie. The body was discovered on Thursday at the Bay View Houses, a public housing development managed by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), located on East 102nd Street between Sea View and Shore Parkway. This was reported by CBS News New York, who noted that the police were called to the scene at approximately 11 a.m.
Adjacent to the building's rear, the abandoned child was found amongst the detritus of the fall, the leaves whispering tales of abandoned hope, as though speaking of the tragedy they concealed. It remains unclear, according to law enforcement sources talking to the New York Post, how long the infant's body had been lying there, shrouded in the stillness of unwanted secrecy before it was discovered.
The New York Post also described the state of the infant upon discovery, his body "stuffed in a black bag and buried among a mound of fallen leaves." Such grim circumstances have brought sorrow to the community and raised questions. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) workers responded to the emergency and pronounced the baby deceased at the scene, as conveyed by the police.
There have been no subsequent arrests in connection to the finding, with the investigation ongoing. The city's medical examiner has been charged with the sad task of determining the precise cause of death.
