Minnesotans in the Twin Cities and parts of western Wisconsin are experiencing the tail end of a snow event early this morning, according to the National Weather Service. Strong northwest winds, with gusts up to 45 mph, have been accompanying the snowfall, resulting in patchy blowing snow that can reduce visibility and create treacherous driving conditions. The National Weather Service has advised that the snow will continue to diminish from west to east throughout the morning.
The winter storm warning, which remains in effect until 9 AM CST today, covers multiple counties, including Anoka, Carver, Chisago, Hennepin, Isanti, Scott, Blue Earth, Le Sueur, and Watonwan, as well as Polk County in Wisconsin. "Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions will impact the Wednesday morning commute," the National Weather Service warned, noting that strong winds "could bring down tree branches."
While today's conditions are expected to clear up, the outlook for the coming days includes more snowfall. "Accumulating snow is likely Friday night and Saturday," the Hazardous Weather Outlook forecasts, with snow anticipated to be substantial enough that spotters and snowfall observers are encouraged to report their findings to the National Weather Service. Minneapolis and its surrounding areas should brace for colder temperatures and additional winter impacts.
In anticipation of the continued cold spell, Minneapolis residents should prepare for more than just the Thanksgiving feast. A high near 28 degrees is expected for today, dipping to 21 tonight. Thanksgiving Day itself will offer a brief respite with partly sunny skies and a high near 27 before the next snowfall starts after midnight on Friday. While Thanksgiving aims to fill hearts and bellies with warmth, the upcoming weather reminds us to also bundle up and stay prepared for the chill.
