Yesterday, a boating incident off the coast of Hanauma Bay left two men stranded after their 12-foot craft succumbed to the ocean's wrath. KITV reported that the vessel sank due to being swamped by a large wave. One of the boaters, a man in his 20s, managed to swim to shore and scaled the rocks to call 911 for help, while the other, a 55-year-old man, was left drifting westward.
The KITV report detailed that the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received the distress call at 4:06 p.m. and arrived on the scene by 4:27 p.m., promptly initiating a rescue operation. Fortunately, a passerby on a jet ski came across the elder man and helped bring him to an HFD rescue boat for further assistance.
Adding to the account, KHON2 highlighted the immediate response of HFD, which dispatched six units upon receiving the alert of the sinking vessel. A good Samaritan's quick thinking facilitated the rescue effort, eventually helping HFD in transferring the 55-year-old boater onto their rescue boat.
In concluding the rescue, the KHON2 report noted that both men were brought to safety near Hanauma Bay. The 55-year-old man suffered potential fatigue, hypothermia, and a cut on his foot. He was treated by Honolulu Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at Maunalua Bay Harbor but decided against going to the emergency room. The younger man, having reached the shore unaided, reported no injuries.
