A UC Berkeley student was hospitalized last Friday after a near-drowning incident at an off-campus fraternity house. The incident, which occurred at the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, is currently under investigation by local police, as reported by CBS News Bay Area.

The 19-year-old, whose identity has not been released, was found unresponsive around 11:30 PM at the fraternity’s pool. Oddly, despite their rapid response and resuscitation efforts, the victim was rushed "Code 3" to Highland Hospital still without a pulse, as documented by radio traffic reviewed by The Berkeley Scanner. The student was last reported to be in critical condition.

Following the event, UC Berkeley Student Affairs issued a statement expressing condolences and affirming their commitment to student safety, "Our thoughts are with the student, their family, loved ones and friends during this time," the university said, per the The Berkeley Scanner. Support has been offered to the student and their family, and free psychological services are available for any students grappling with the incident.

Alpha Delta Phi's national leadership also issued a terse statement, per CBS News Bay Area, “Alpha Delta Phi is aware of an incident at the University of California-Berkeley and is fully cooperating with the local authorities; our priority is the safety and well-being of all members and guests,” indicating that, as this remains an active investigation, they were unable to provide additional details. Tragically, it said very little about the steps the fraternity plans to take to prevent similar future incidents.
