The Union County Sheriff's Office has taken a significant step in combatting child exploitation with the arrest of Paul Metcalf, following an investigation that stemmed from a cyber tip provided by a social media platform. The Special Victims Unit, acting on the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) tip, was able to swiftly identify and apprehend the suspect, according to a social media post by the sheriff's office.
Following the issuance of a search warrant, detectives carried out a thorough examination of Metcalf's residence and seized all digital devices. During a follow-up interview at the scene, Metcalf admitted to possessing Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). He was taken to the Union County Detention Center, where he was initially held on a $200,000 bond. As investigators dug deeper into the contents of the devices, they uncovered a trove of more than 23,000 illegal images, a discovery that led to additional charges and a second $200,000 bond for Metcalf, the sheriff's office detailed.

Sheriff Eddie Cathey, expressing his satisfaction with the team's performance, stated, "I could not be prouder of the detectives and our Crime Lab staff. Currently, Metcalf remains in custody at the Union County Detention Center under a total bond of $400,000. The case, still active and ongoing signifies the potent combination of community vigilance, and law enforcement proficiency coming together to ensure those who exploit the innocence of minors are brought to justice.
