In a display of raw talent that Utah Mammoth fans won't soon forget, rookie sensation Logan Cooley netted a staggering four goals on Monday night against the Vegas Golden Knights, pacing his team to a dominant 5-1 victory. Frankly, scoring a quartet of goals is no small feat, and doing so in such decisive fashion earned Cooley a spot in the Mammoth history books as the first player to accomplish that with the franchise, according to ABC4.
Cooley, whose hands were described as hot that night by the blistering shots that found the net, also contributed an assist on Dylan Guenther's goal, capping his five-point night, another career high for the 21-year-old. Mammoth's head coach Andre Tourigny pointed out Cooley's speed and simplicity, saying, "He didn't complicate his game. It was speed, simple, gets space behind and when he does that, it's special," in an interview obtained by NHL.com.
It wasn't all about the offensive firepower, though. Karel Vejmelka, Mammoth's goaltender, often dubbed "Veggie" by the fans, was described to be a veritable wall in net, turning away 33 of the 34 shots he faced. “Yeah, I think we are a really good team, and if we want to be successful, we need to find a way every night, and that’s part of being one of the best teams in the NHL. So, we need to find a way every single night, no matter what, and we did it tonight. We showed up, and it feels really good,” Vejmelka told KSL Sports, reflecting on his standout performance.
Not to downplay the individual performances, the rest of the team contributed to what was described as a well-fought game. "Our chemistry is only going to continue to grow…when we’re using our speed together, we’re tough to contain," Cooley said, as per KSL Sports, outlining the synergy he has with Guenther, which has been a consistent theme throughout the season. The Mammoth's victory, a sorely needed one as they contended with a sputtering record earlier in the month, sent a message that echoed throughout the league: they won’t go down without a fight. This win was elaborated to be critical in getting the team back on track, as they anticipated their next challenge against Montreal on Wednesday evening.
