Fried dough fanatics in Waikele can breathe a sigh of relief as Leonard Jr's Hot Malasadas & Expresso has been given the green light to re-welcome customers. After a brief closure due to health safety violations, the popular spot is back in business, having satisfied the Hawai‘i Department of Health's (DOH) Food Safety Branch (FSB) requirements for food safety. In a turn of events that closed them down last Tuesday, it took just a day for Leonard Jr's to clean up their act and pass a follow-up inspection last Wednesday.
The quick turnaround was critical for Leonard Jr's, a fixture in the Waikele Shopping Center, especially considering the eatery was slapped with a red placard and had to shut its doors immediately. Swift actions to correct the identified issues ensured their closure was as short as a coffee break. The establishment was also advised "to continue monitoring their water supply and retrain workers on proper handwashing and glove use," as reported by the Hawai‘i Department of Health's news release.
The Hawai‘i Department of Health Food Safety Branch, responsible for keeping Hawai‘i's residents and visitors out of harm's way when it comes to foodborne illnesses, is clearly doing its job. Not only do they provide the necessary checks and balances through routine inspections, but they also play a crucial role in educating workers in the food industry, ensuring safety standards are up to par across the state.
The FSB not only oversees daily food operations but also investigates foodborne illness sources and contamination risks. They work with business owners and staff to keep food preparation safe. Leonard Jr’s quick response shows these efforts in action. The Hawai‘i Department of Health takes food safety seriously—and so do the customers who depend on it.
