The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is giving anglers something to be thankful for this Black Friday. Instead of battling the shopping crowds, Washingtonians can reel in their own freshwater feast with nearly 65,000 rainbow trout being stocked in lakes across the state. According to an announcement from the department, these jumbo trout, tipping scales at up to three pounds and stretching up to 17 inches, will be available ahead of the holiday weekend.
According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), in an effort to continue a decade-long tradition, the WDFW's Black Friday fishing aims to lure people outdoors amidst the holiday bustle. While past years have proven successful, the department looks to once again encourage anglers, both seasoned and new, to truly enjoy the experience of fishing over the holiday weekend. As Steve Caromile, WDFW inland fish program manager, told the agency, "It's a great way to get outdoors over the holiday weekend." The selected lakes and ponds are close to communities, broadening access for a few hours on the water with friends and family.
Some of the destinations include Fourth of July Lake in Adams and Lincoln counties and Green Lake in King County, among others, namely Battle Ground Lake and Klineline Pond in Clark County, ensuring a variety of picturesque settings for casting lines are within reach. This strategy reflects the department's central goal: to weave the fabric of fishing into the weekend pastimes of Washingtonians during this typically commercial holiday.
Safety is also top of mind, with advisories on cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, provided by county health departments. Anglers are encouraged to verify water conditions prior to their trips, especially during November, when such occurrences, while uncommon, can still be present. Prospective fishers must remember to have a valid Washington freshwater fishing license, which is required for anglers 16 and older, valid through March 31, 2026, and can easily be acquired online or at various vendors statewide.
