Something innovative is unfolding at Waukesha County Communications, where the local sheriff's department has announced the integration of an AI-assisted call handling system named Aurelian. Beginning the week of November 10, the new technology aims to streamline how non-emergency calls are processed. The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department shared a social media post originally posted by Waukesha County Communications. Aurelian comes into play to help, "Reducing administrative call volume" so that dispatchers can prioritize critical incidents.
The system, named Ava, features a chatbot designed to quickly gather information from individuals reporting non-emergency situations. It is supposed to efficiently summarize calls and alert dispatchers through a dashboard, freeing up crucial resources and possibly reducing response times for more urgent calls. This initiative marks a step towards optimizing the workload of 911 telecommunicators, who juggle a range of calls from minor nuisances to dire emergencies. Aurelian also boasts additional utilities such as "language translation, transcription, and location validation," per the same announcement.
The need for such a system arises from the myriad of non-critical calls that can clog emergency response channels. These range from "barking dogs to parking questions," as the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department's post highlights. It's an issue that can delay dispatchers from addressing life-threatening situations. With Aurelian, the goal is to ensure every caller receives the assistance they need with greater efficiency.
Functioning as a first point of contact for non-emergency callers, Ava serves as the first point of contact for non-emergency callers while ensuring that emergency calls are always routed directly to a live dispatcher. By adopting Aurelian, the department is signaling its commitment to using technology to improve community services. Officials say more details on the system’s deployment and operation will be released soon, as the department works to keep the public informed about this new initiative.
