Residents in White Settlement are being encouraged to be mindful of their holiday kitchen clean-up practices, especially regarding the disposal of fats and oils. In a bid to keep local plumbing systems running smoothly, the White Settlement Community Services has kicked off its Holiday Grease Roundup, which runs until January 16, as per a recent social media post on their Facebook page.
According to the post, cooking oil, greasy foods, dairy products, and salad dressing should not be poured down the drain as they can lead to blockages. Instead, the community services advises using strainers to catch solids in the sink. Misplaced advice to prevent pipe blockages also suggests letting grease cool before disposal and bringing it to a designated collection site at 8212 Albert Street.
The effort to keep the infrastructure intact is significant, as congealed grease can harden in sewer lines over time, leading to backup and costly repairs. A simple yet effective solution offered by the White Settlement authorities is for residents to cool their leftover cooking grease, then pour it into a container with a tight lid, after which it can be taken to the collection point for proper disposal.
