A two-family home in Winthrop was heavily damaged by a fire yesterday morning, forcing 10 people to evacuate, officials reported. The blaze began on the second-floor porch of the property at 105 Shirley Street and was extinguished by local firefighters with assistance from nearby departments.
Firefighters were dispatched at around 11:20 a.m. and faced "heavy fire and smoke," according to Boston 25 News. After nearly two hours of firefighting, the blaze was brought under control by 1:05 p.m., with efforts complicated by the building's layout.
All residents were evacuated from the home safely, and no injuries were reported. WHDH shared Fire Chief Stephen Calandra's statement that “Winthrop crews and mutual aid partners did a great job bringing this under control quickly given the tight quarters, preventing a much worse outcome."
Following an assessment by City Inspectional Services, the residence was declared uninhabitable due to fire damage. The displaced residents, affected by the loss of four rooms, have secured temporary accommodations with family members. Fire Chief Calandra also recognized the Winthrop Police Department for their assistance with traffic control and on-scene support.
Officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire, and investigations are ongoing. Local responders and agencies worked together quickly, helping to limit the extent of the damage.
