Wright County residents who have recently purchased a new home or moved should be aware of an important deadline approaching for property taxes. The County Assessor's Office issued a reminder for homeowners and those occupying a property with a relative to file their homestead application by December 31, 2025, to affect their 2026 property taxes and Property Tax Refund eligibility. A homestead application is essential to potentially lower property taxes and qualify for certain tax refunds.
According to a notice published by the Wright County Assessor's Office, a "qualifying relative" spans across a wide family network, including parents, grandparents, siblings, children, and even aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews of the property owner or their spouse. This extended definition of relative means that more people may be eligible for homestead status than they realize, provided they apply by the year-end deadline.
To simplify the application process, the assessor's office has made it possible for residents to apply online through the Wright County Assessor's webpage. Once granted, homeowners typically don't need to reapply annually for the homestead status unless specifically requested by the County Assessor. However, any changes in the use of the property or to the homestead status, such as a sale or a move, must be reported within 30 days to avoid any penalties or a reclassification of the property status.
As the deadline looms, the assessor's office is encouraging potential applicants not to delay in reaching out. They have made it clear: "Contact your County Assessor to file a homestead application if you or a qualifying relative occupy the property as a homestead on or before December 31, 2025." In case of queries or assistance, the Wright County Assessor's office is reachable at (763) 682-7367. Meeting the end-of-year deadline ensures residents can benefit from the available tax relief associated with homesteading their property for the coming year.
