Zoo Miami has recently introduced two new young lions to their exhibits, marking a significant moment as the species makes a return following the loss of the previous lion residents. According to WSVN, the two male lions, Azizi and Jasiri, who are siblings born in June 2024, have just completed their quarantine after arriving from the Phoenix Zoo on November 6.
Having barely surpassed their first year, these lions are at the cusp of developing the full manes that will come to definitively mark their maturity. "On Tuesday, the brothers stepped into their exhibit for the first time, cautiously exploring the habitat side by side," WSVN reported. During their initial exploration, the lions interacted with various enrichment items and scaled a large rock formation, cheekily referred to as "Pride Rock" by the zoo staff, in reference to the iconic location from Disney's "The Lion King." To smoothly transition the lions into their new environment, the zoo provided them with large bones to chew on before retreating to rest in their holding area.
The public can expect to slowly start seeing more of Azizi and Jasiri in the coming weeks as they go through a "soft opening" with periodic exhibit access, gradually becoming a more regular presence at the zoo. In a statement obtained by Local 10, Zoo Miami's Communications Director Ron Magill shared that the brothers were introduced to their new habitat last Thursday. "The lions, just over a year old, are beginning to grow the manes that will eventually mark them as adults," he noted.
This pair of lions represents the initial steps in Zoo Miami's long-term strategy to rebuild a pride, with intent to introduce female lions in alignment with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, as reported by WSVN. Adding to their commitment, Zoo Miami also contributes to lion conservation efforts beyond the confines of the zoo, dedicating funds to help protect lions across Africa, a plan highlighted by Local 10.
