A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection to a shooting incident that left a young woman severely injured in Canton, Massachusetts. The teen, whose identity has not been disclosed due to his age, faces an attempted murder charge for the violence that unfolded last night, as per reports from NBC Boston.
The shooting took place shortly before 7 p.m. near Lamplighter Village apartments at Turnpike Street and Stagecoach Road where the woman was discovered after suffering a gunshot wound while inside a car. Authorities issued and then later lifted a shelter-in-place order for residents of nearby areas such as the Canton Woods Apartments and Lamplighter during the course of their investigation.
Following the incident, the victim, a woman in her 20s, was transported to a Boston hospital where she is currently receiving treatment for serious injuries. The authorities managed to apprehend the suspect by 6 a.m. Tuesday morning without any further incident.
Interim Canton Police Chief Joseph Perkins shed light on the incident, noting, "It was a transaction of merchandise that took place. After the sale went bad, the suspect allegedly shot the victim in the vehicle," according to an interview with WCVB. It remains unclear whether the victim was the buyer or the seller in the social media marketplace exchange gone awry. The shooting is not believed to be a random act of violence.
Perkins also highlighted a safety precaution relating to social media marketplace transactions, stating that many Massachusetts police departments have designated safe spaces for such exchanges. No information was provided regarding the condition of another person who was in the passenger seat and uninjured during the shooting.
