A tragic multi-vehicle crash in Huntington Beach on Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of a 37-year-old man. The collision, which involved at least seven vehicles, occurred just before 3 p.m. at the intersection of Goldenwest Street and Heil Avenue, according to KTLA. Authorities reported that one of the vehicles, a Tesla Model 3, was speeding and lost control, resulting in a rollover and multiple impacts.
Broken glass and twisted metal marked the scene where the man from Huntington Beach was found deceased inside the overturned car. Three other individuals were transported to hospital, including two Orange County probation officers who were injured when their vehicle was struck. The condition of one officer remains undisclosed, as reported by CBS Los Angeles.
Footage from the incident, captured on a dashcam, shows the Tesla as it hurtled through the intersection, eventually colliding with other vehicles and rolling several times. "We saw a car flying up the road and our light had just turned green and we were ready to take off," George Spaulding, a witness at the red light, recounted in a statement obtained by KTLA. Spaulding's wife, Lori Sanchez, echoed his sentiments in disbelief over the speed of the car and the resulting chaos.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, with authorities yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol were factors. No arrests have been made thus far. The Huntington Beach Police Department is urging witnesses or those with information to contact Traffic Investigator S. Flynn at 714-536-5666, as mentioned in reports from NBC Los Angeles.
The aftermath of the crash led to road closures as emergency services and officers worked to clear the debris. Video from AIR7 highlighted the gravity of the situation, with at least four vehicles suffering substantial damage. This information was corroborated by ABC7, which also noted that firefighters at the scene covered the Tesla, lying flipped and lifeless, with a tarp.
