A 61-year-old man was discovered deceased in a Greenfield home following a fire reported on Sunday, WISN reports. Authorities were called to the scene near 46th Street and Layton Avenue before 1:30 p.m. after a chemical smell alerted neighbors, leading police and fire departments to respond. Upon entering the single-family residence, first responders located the man inside a bedroom where the fire had been contained and had extinguished itself.
The Greenfield Police Department, alongside the Milwaukee Fire Department Hazmat Team, has commenced a joint investigation into the incident; however, the circumstances are "not believed to be criminal in nature," according to statements obtained by WISN, and while the investigation continues there are no ongoing safety concerns for the community. Per a report from CBS 58, the victim was the sole occupant of the home, and no other individuals were present during the time of the incident.
The Milwaukee Fire Department's Hazmat Team was additionally deployed to the site given the presence of the chemical odor, as noted by FOX 6 News. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined and remains under investigation, therefore, no further details will be released until the inquiry has concluded; in accordance with the reports, no injuries to any police officer or firefighter were reported during the response to the fire.
FOX 6 News also indicated that the emergency call was placed after there were issues trying to reach the inhabitant, and entry to the residence was made around 1:26 p.m. The departments involved in the ongoing investigation have withheld additional information at this time and stress that there is no further risk to those living nearby, the joint efforts of police and fire departments aim to shed light on the somber event that claimed the life of one amongst our own community fabric.
