A 64-year-old woman was caught in the crossfire and wounded by a stray bullet while traversing the streets of Upper Manhattan, as confirmed by NYPD officials. The incident, which unfolded near West 204th Street and Broadway in Inwood, occurred at around 4:30 p.m. on November 24. The woman reportedly noticed a group of young people in close proximity just before one individual discharged a 9mm round, striking her in the left buttock.
Gothamist reports that in the aftermath of the shooting, the alleged perpetrator fled southbound on Broadway while the victim received care at Harlem Hospital and is said to be in stable condition. Fleeing the scene, police have yet to apprehend the suspect involved in the shooting.
The NYPD Crimestoppers has issued a plea for public assistance, requesting any available information through direct messages or calls to their hotline: 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
In a post circulated by NYPD Crimestoppers on Facebook, the suspect wanted for the assault has been identified as an unidentified individual who "displayed a firearm and discharged a round toward a group of males," inadvertently wounding the woman. As law enforcement seeks tips from the community, the investigation into the November shooting continues.
Despite this act of violence, NYPD data reflects a significant reduction in shootings for the area under the jurisdiction of the 34th Precinct, encompassing Inwood and Washington Heights. An apparent decrease of nearly 60% has been reported for the year, with only seven shootings tallied up through November 23 – a sharp drop from the previous year's count of 17 in the same timeframe, according to statistics shared by Gothamist.
