The FBI is currently on the hunt for a 73-year-old woman from Michigan, Mary Carole McDonnell, who allegedly led a sophisticated bank fraud scheme by impersonating an heiress to the McDonnell Aircraft family, deceitfully claiming she had an $80 million "secret" trust fund. According to information provided by NBC Los Angeles, McDonnell managed to swindle an estimated $30 million from banks and financial institutions in Los Angeles and Orange Counties between July 2017 and May 2018.
Using several aliases such as Mary Carole Carroll and Mary Carroll McDonald, McDonnell, whose previous work included a chief executive position at the now-defunct Burbank production company Bellum Entertainment LLC, is said to have defrauded Banc of California to the tune of about $14.7 million, as well as using the same methods to dupe other institutions out of an additional $15 million, during a period when her company was struggling to meet financial obligations and faced civil complaints over debts exceeding $1 million, the FBI reportedly stated in a news release referred to by KTLA.
Following the accrual of enough evidence to charge her, a federal arrest warrant was issued in December 2018 for bank fraud and aggravated identity theft, at a time when McDonnell is believed to have relocated to Dubai, points to information from the FBI website. Described as a white woman with blue eyes, standing 5 feet 7 inches tall, and weighing around 145 pounds, she has a noticeable scar on her right knee and ties to Los Angeles, California; Montgomery, Alabama; and now, perhaps establishing herself in the United Arab Emirates.
Interestingly, at the same time McDonnell is accused of engaging in fraudulent activities, she reportedly defended the financial instability of Bellum Entertainment by blaming "significant bank fraud" as the cause of her company's inability to meet payroll obligations; this assertion, contradicting the ongoing investigation that was undeniably revealing her own deceitful practices, was once detailed by Deadline as mentioned by KTLA. The unravelling of McDonnell's alleged schemes sends a stark reminder of the not-so-distant shadows cast by fraudulent machinations, poised to strike at the very institutions that underpin our economic trustworthiness.
The FBI encourages anyone with knowledge of McDonnell's whereabouts urging that they contact the local FBI office or the nearest American Embassy or Consulate, as the search for this purported grandee of grandeur, who turned out to be but a grand illusionist, continues across continents.
