A 9-year-old girl is currently recovering after being inadvertently wounded during a late-night shootout in a southeast Houston neighborhood. The violent encounter took place just after midnight in the 4700 block of Wenda Street, near Cullen Boulevard, following an escalating argument outside of the Cullen Apartments, both Click2Houston and FOX 26 Houston report.
This incident unfolded rapidly; when shots were fired by one group, individuals began to instinctively run, with the child among those attempting to escape the chaotic scene. Houston authorities arrived to find the 9-year-old with a gunshot wound. She had to be quickly transported to Texas Children’s Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. According to investigators, after the first shots, some chose to hastily leave on foot, while others quickly jumped into and drove away in a dark-colored Jeep. "The group that was running returned fire at the other group," Lt. J.P. Harlicka of the Houston Police Department stated in an interview obtained by Click2Houston.
The Houston Police Department is actively piecing together the sequence of events that led up to the shooting. However, what sparked the initial argument between the two groups remains unclear. Detectives are working to identify all individuals involved. The only detail released about the participants is that the groups contained multiple men, seemingly in their 20s, as described by FOX 26 Houston.
As of now, there is not much information available on potential suspects or the number of people police are seeking. Authorities are urging anyone who might have witnessed the shooting or has video evidence to quickly come forward. "Anyone with information is asked to contact the Houston Police Department," Click2Houston reported, or alternatively, tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers.
This unfortunate event marks the second shooting tied to escalated confrontations in as many days in the area. The community and police alike are now grappling to address this sudden spike in violence as the new year approaches, hoping to ensure safer streets for all residents, especially the innocent bystanders most vulnerable to such random acts of aggression.
