Details have emerged in the tragic shooting of National Guardsman Sarah Beckstrom, which has led to new federal charges for Rahmanullah Lakanwal, age 29. The Afghan national, formerly residing in Bellingham, Washington, now faces federal charges after the ambush-style attack that claimed Beckstrom's life and wounded Guardsman Andrew Wolfe. The U.S. Attorney's Office announced these developments in its latest update.

As part of the ongoing investigation handled by the FBI's Washington Field Office and the Metropolitan Police Department, Lakanwal has been charged at the federal level with transporting a firearm in interstate commerce with the intent to commit an offense and for transporting a stolen firearm. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro commented on the gravity of the case, stating, "The transfer of the case from Superior Court to District Court ensures that we can undertake the serious, deliberate, and weighty analysis required to determine if a death penalty is appropriate here." The assault left Beckstrom, only 20, dead and her family grappling with loss during the holiday season, while Wolfe, miraculously surviving, faces a difficult recovery ahead, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office press release.

The attack occurred on November 26th at approximately 2:13 p.m. near the Farragut West Metro Station. Armed with a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver, reported stolen in Seattle in 2023, Lakanwal shot both guardsmen in the head without any prior provocation. It was two Majors in the National Guard who were able to subdue the assailant at the scene shortly after the incident.

In a poignant reminder of the attack's consequences, Sarah Beckstrom, aged 20, passed away from her injuries on Thanksgiving Day, November 27. Andrew Wolfe, aged 24, was critically injured during the ambush. Lakanwal remains charged with an array of serious offenses, including first-degree murder and assault with intent to kill, in addition to the federal charges he currently faces, according to the same press release.
