A routine investigation took an unexpected turn when a K9 unit was struck by a vehicle in Alhambra, as reported by the city’s Police Department on their Facebook page. The collision occurred as the driver, identified as Anthony Ruiz of Alhambra, CA, was traveling northbound on Fremont Ave. and hit the K9 unit housing K9 Doggo, a police service dog. Following the incident, Ruiz attempted to quickly flee the scene, but the damaged state of his vehicle prevented a swift escape. Subsequently, officers arrested Ruiz on charges of hit and run and DUI.
According to the Alhambra Police Department's post, Ruiz had confessed to having been drinking at a bar in Los Angeles before the incident. Further investigation revealed that Ruiz was not only intoxicated but also had previous warrants for DUI. In a piece of fortunate news, the Police reported that K9 Doggo was unharmed and remained in good spirits despite the event.
The Police Department used the occurrence to underscore the importance of personal responsibility during the holiday season, especially regarding transportation after celebrations. They urged the community to plan ahead for a safe ride home. The department emphasized options such as taking a ride service, utilizing public transportation like taxis, buses, or trains, or simply calling a sober friend.
The post concluded with a reminder: "If you suspect someone is driving under the influence, call 9-1-1 immediately." This statement is a clear prompt to actively ensure the safety of not only oneself but others on the road during festive times when such incidents are unfortunately more common.
