
An Alpena man, aged 35, was shot and killed by police following an altercation during a traffic stop today. According to MLive, the man was in a vehicle reported as stolen when stopped by officers from the Alpena Police Department on Grant Street near Lawn Street in Alpena Township.
During the stop, police report that the man produced a knife, wounding an officer with a cut, which led to the officer discharging their weapon. "The preliminary investigation indicated that during the traffic stop, an occupant produced a knife and cut an officer from the Alpena Police Department," said Specialist Lt. Ashley Miller of Michigan State Police, per MLive. After being transported to a local hospital, the suspect was pronounced dead.
As detailed by 9and10news, the injured officer received medical attention for a hand laceration and is in recovery. The incident has prompted an investigation, which is being handled by the Michigan State Police Investigative Response Team, alongside a unit from the agency's Crime Lab that responded to process the crime scene.
The two officers involved in the shooting, both from the Alpena Police Department, have since been placed on paid administrative leave as the investigation is ongoing. The injured person recovered after treatment, and the officer was treated at a local hospital. With the inquiry still active, authorities have said that additional details will be released as they become available. “More details will be shared with the local community as they emerge,” noted Miller, as reported by 9and10news.
