Daquan Barfield, 30, has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal August shooting in the Archer Heights neighborhood, according to Chicago police. The victim, a 33-year-old man, was shot in the 4900 block of South Archer Avenue on Aug. 22, and the arrest marks a significant turn in the case months after the killing.
According to FOX 32 Chicago, Barfield was taken into custody on Thursday in the 0 to 100 block of South Austin Boulevard. Investigators identified him as the alleged shooter in the Aug. 22 attack, and prosecutors have charged him with one felony count of first-degree murder.
Case background
The victim was identified as 33-year-old Kewaun Clark, who was found shot while sitting in a vehicle in the 4900 block of South Archer Avenue, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. An autopsy determined that Clark died from multiple gunshot wounds, and the death was ruled a homicide. At the time of that earlier report, the Sun-Times noted that no arrest had been made in the case.
What the charge carries
Barfield is facing a first-degree murder charge, a felony that under Illinois law carries a standard prison term of 20 to 60 years. In certain aggravated situations, the sentence can be extended or result in a natural-life term, according to Justia. Any conviction would be determined in Cook County criminal court, and Barfield remains presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty.
Next steps in court
Barfield's next court date was scheduled for Sunday, when he is expected to make an initial appearance, the station reports. FOX 32 Chicago also notes that additional filings or public comments from prosecutors were not immediately available.
The case remains under investigation. Hoodline will update this story as court records or official statements become available.
