Following a unanimous decision by the Arizona Corporation Commission, the contentious Lava Run Interconnection Project's application has been directed back to the drawing board. The project, which proposed constructing a 27-mile transmission line to connect the Lava Run Wind and Solar Projects with a sizable energy storage system to Tucson Electric Power's substation, faced stern criticism from the local community. Vice Chair Nick Myers cast a significant vote alongside others to reassess the application, as reported on the commission's website.
"Although the Commission only has jurisdiction over the transmission and interconnection and not the wind and solar projects, I firmly believe it was the right decision to send the item back to the LSC," Myers stated. His stance reflects a broader sentiment that initial community input hadn't been adequately considered. The move to remit the application aims to more fully include Apache County in the conversation and to resolve to intensely better address the public's concerns.
This reversal comes after the Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee previously voted in favour of granting a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility to CG Apache County Wind LLC and CG Apache County Solar LLC. The project, which promises to deliver renewable energy through the construction of a wind project, a solar venture, and an associated energy storage facility, fell under scrutiny for potential environmental and community impact.
The decision underscores the importance of local engagement in the deployment of large-scale energy infrastructure. "Community notification is not the same as community engagement. The community needs to be heard, and their concerns need to be properly addressed," Myers emphasised. He encouraged the applicants to reach out to the community and attempt to reach some kind of resolution, signifying the commission's commitment to ensuring that energy projects advance without marginalising community sentiment and ecological responsibility.
