December has become synonymous with the spirit of giving for an Arizona couple, Joe and Crystal Pabustan, who annually transform their personal tragedy into a beacon of joy for children across the Valley. As documented by ABC15, the Pabustans' "Smiles from Caleb" initiative, now in its 12th year, continues to bring holiday cheer to youngsters at the Michigan RV & Mobile Home Park off of Grand Avenue, expanding from a mere five toys given in its inception to serving thousands of children today.
Despite the exponential growth of their effort, the journey hasn't been without its challenges. "At first it was super hard," Crystal told ABC15, recounting the grief of losing their son Caleb, in whose memory the initiative was founded. Joe added, "You’re like, how am I going to live the rest of my life without my son, and you just don’t think it’s possible." Their son's tragic death in 2013, just over a year old, lends a deeper meaning to their annual tradition.
The couple's touching story has not only resonated with the local community, but also caught wider attention, as reported by Yahoo News. With each toy distributed, the Pabustans see it as an extension of their own healing.
"The idea is to help these kids get new toys," Joe said, "But really when we give, it helps our own hearts." This year, the Pabustans are shifting their focus from seeking donations to spreading a simple, yet profound message. "Our call to action is to go out and be the reason somebody has a reason to smile," they told ABC15. With plans to visit a daycare before Christmas to deliver baby toys, they wrap up another year of giving, driven by the belief that their efforts can make both a community – and their hearts – to be a better place.
