Arizona's approach to tackling the wildfire insurance crisis is forging ahead with the recent establishment of a new Fire Insurance Review Task Force. As reported by the Coconino County Board of Supervisors, State Forester Thomas Torres briefed the board on the role and objectives of the task force, born from the legislation HB 2045 passed earlier this year. The team, consisting of members from the insurance industry and wildfire experts, aims to address the critical insurance issues facing residents in fire-prone areas of northern Arizona.

The Task Force, appointed by the State Forester, brings together diverse experience from officials like Wildland Fire Battalion Chief Paul Oltrogge of the City of Flagstaff Fire Department and Timber Mesa Fire District Chief Randy Chevalier. In a move to broadly collect and analyse data, their mandate includes delving into the specifics of insurance coverage, rates, and the instances of non-renewals and cancellations. These insights are expected to not only identify trends but also to strategically influence legislative recommendations on building codes and other risk-reduction measures. District 1 Supervisor and Board Chair Patrice Horstman voiced the county's intent to actively participate in the dialogue and problem-solving process, stating, "We want to be part of the discussion and the solution."

According to the presentation, available here, the Task Force will utilise the wildfirerisk.org model, which provides a peer-reviewed, nationally recognised framework for assessing wildfire risks. The model not only predicts wildland fire threats but also scrutinises risks in built environments. This data-centric approach underpins the Task Force's objective to develop tools and strategies that would ease the fire insurance woes of homeowners by potentially stabilising and reducing premium rates.

The inaugural meeting of the Task Force is slated for January 2026, promising to kick-start what many hope will be a valuable contribution to wildfire risk mitigation across Arizona. Acknowledging the collective effort, Horstman emphasised the county's eager anticipation of the Task Force's work and findings: "We are glad to have local representatives on the Task Force and look forward to learning about their work and recommendations." Residents and officials alike are keen to have concrete data and strategies to possibly translate into more affordable and accessible fire insurance options in the not-so-distant future.
