State Rep. Nick Kupper is sounding the alarm over Arizona’s noncompliance with federal SNAP data sharing requirements, cautioning Governor Katie Hobbs and Attorney General Kris Mayes of the peril facing the state's food assistance funding. The potential federal funding withdrawal could heavily impact Arizona families reliant on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
In a forthright letter, Rep. Kupper expressed his concerns about the potential consequences of blocking the data requested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which is intended to ensure the proper distribution of SNAP benefits. According to the letter obtained by Arizona State Legislature, without this compliance, Arizona stands to lose critical federal funds. "Families who follow the rules and rely on SNAP to get through the week should not be put at risk because the Governor and Attorney General are choosing political fights," stated Kupper in the correspondence.
The nudge from Kupper arrives in the wake of the U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins' statement on Tuesday, where she underscored the risk to states that refuse to share required SNAP data with the federal government. Secretary Rollins highlighted that the data is crucial to maintaining the integrity of the SNAP program by verifying eligibility and curbing misuse of taxpayer money.
Kupper's warning takes on significant weight as Arizona joins the list of states grappling with this issue, emphasizing that withholding data could lead to interrupted food assistance for households that qualify. "The federal government has made the requirement clear. If Arizona refuses to comply, our state risks losing SNAP funding altogether. That outcome would punish people who legitimately need help," Kupper asserted, as per his letter to the state officials.
The timing is notable, as Arizona approaches an election year, and political strategies begin to surface. Rep. Kupper, a Republican representing Legislative District 25, is calling for pragmatic governance over political brinkmanship when it comes to these essential services.
