Eight-year-old Kayla Frazier was expected to spend her Christmas playing and opening gifts, but instead she is confined to a hospital bed after being struck by a car in Atlanta. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the young cheerleader from the Georgia Rattlers was hit last Friday near her home. Her mother, Tia Lawson watched helplessly through surveillance footage as her daughter lay unconscious, awaiting emergency services. "As they were crossing the street, the car hit my baby," Lawson told FOX 5 Atlanta, conveying the horror of seeing her child in such a vulnerable state.
The incident occurred on Joseph E. Boone Blvd. and has since left young Frazier hospitalized, missing out on the festivities of the season. "I just saw a lot of people moving and crying and being hysterical," Lawson described the scene before learning that her daughter was the one struck, as noted by FOX 5 Atlanta. Kayla sustained injuries that required two surgeries and will need a full-body brace for the coming months. Recovery includes physical therapy so the 8-year-old can learn how to walk again. Atlanta Police have not yet indicated whether charges will be filed in connection with the incident.
Details from CBS News Atlanta noted that the crash happened on December 19 when a driver managed to avoid one child but tragically not Kayla. Although the police found the pedestrian to be at fault, the overarching sentiment expressed by Lawson was a desperate concern for Kayla. "All I cared about. I just want my baby to make it," she told CBS News Atlanta. In the face of heavy sedation and the looming challenge of rehabilitation, Frazier was still able to communicate with a thumbs-up to her family.
The medical ordeal has left the family facing substantial financial hardship. With Lawson being the sole provider for her five children, the costs associated with Kayla's recovery are daunting. To help alleviate some of the pressure, the family has set up a GoFundMe page. Lawson exudes a poignant sense of gratitude amidst the Christmas season, thanking that her daughter survived the ordeal.
