With the holiday season approaching, Atlanta’s public safety officials are increasing their presence to ensure a safe and secure environment for the city’s bustling holiday shoppers. Police Chief Darin Schierbaum, alongside Atlanta Fire Rescue Chief Rod Smith, gathered at Atlantic Station delivering a clear message to residents: remain vigilant against thefts that rise during this time of the year, particularly, those involving packages and automobiles, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Speaking to the expected rise in bustling crowds as Christmas and New Year's approach, Schierbaum warned that despite projected decreases in car break-ins, the holiday season is ripe for such crimes and advised the community to keep a watchful eye, with the department having deployed extended patrols around malls and shopping centers since Thanksgiving, these efforts will continue through the New Year according to a statement obtained by Atlanta News First.
Local shoppers like Darold Boone, who starts his gift buying as early as October, expressed appreciation for the increased police numbers, Boone said more officers on patrol help deter crime in an interview with FOX 5, reinforcing the sentiment that a heightened police presence can make potential criminals think twice before engaging in nefarious activities.
To help Atlantans steer clear of becoming targets, APD Sergeant Houston provided practical tips such as locking car doors, removing valuables from sight, limiting trips between stores and vehicles, and being prudent with what’s left at the curbside, using a demonstration vehicle to illustrate how even a single visible item could make a car appealing to thieves, Houston said "Your trash can truly tell a story about who you are and what you have inside of your home,", he emphasized the need for vigilance and trusting one's instincts if something feels out of place as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The fire department is also taking the opportunity to remind the community of fire safety protocols; Smith urging those cooking Christmas meals to remain in the kitchen, be cautious when frying turkeys, and practise fireworks safety, calling for proper handling and usage in authorized areas only, moving on, Smith did not forget to mention the classic advice of keeping trees well-watered to prevent fires.
As the holiday shopping season peaks, Atlanta police are preparing for larger crowds. Schierbaum confirmed that extra staff, including administrative personnel, have been reassigned to busy areas like Atlantic Station and Buckhead to maintain a strong police presence. Officials say their goal is to keep the season safe for both residents and visitors.
