Community members of Atlantic Station are confronting the looming loss of their neighborhood Publix with action. Dozens rallied yesterday, expressing concern over the gap the store's closure will leave in convenient grocery shopping and access to fresh food. Satya Bhan, president of the Atlantic Station Civic Association, described the closure, which is set to occur December 27, as "a huge blow to the community" in remarks covered by FOX 5 Atlanta. With additional departures from DSW and Banana Republic, residents are seeking transparency and are pressing for a place at the table in discussions about the site's future uses.
In response to the Publix exit, Atlantic Station management has begun discussing interim solutions, including the possibility of a shuttle service to other grocery stores. "We recognize the importance of convenient access to everyday needs, including groceries, and are working on near-term solutions while longer-term leasing efforts continue," management said in a statement obtained by 11Alive. This statement came after a group of residents protested outside the Publix, eventually moving to the 17th Street Bridge to draw attention to their cause.
Residents emphasized the importance of the Publix store, especially for those without vehicles. "It's not only the primary, walkable, accessible grocery store for Atlantic Station residents and also services everybody that lives in Loring Heights," Bhan told FOX 5 Atlanta. Concerns are particularly acute for elderly and disabled residents reliant on proximity. Though there is a Target at Atlantic Station, its grocery section is limited, raising fears of a food desert in the making.
Optimism nonetheless colors some of the community reactions. Zaneta Impower, a local resident, told FOX 5 Atlanta, "It's very disturbing to know that our grocery store is going to leave," "But it's an exciting time to see what comes next." Atlantic Station has assured that bringing another grocer onboard remains a top priority as they usher in new concepts to the space, stressing their intent to "maintain convenience and service for residents" during the transition.
Despite the closure of the Publix at Atlantic Station and another location at 2562 Shallowford Road near Chamblee, discussions between community leaders and Atlantic Station management continue, with the hope of achieving a satisfying resolution to the concerns raised by residents faced with their local Publix closing doors.
