A Baltimore Police detective was injured after being struck by a patrol car while in pursuit of a suspect. The incident, occurring around 5:30 p.m. yesterday in the 5600 block of York Road, resulted in the detective being transported to a nearby hospital. As reported by WMAR2 News, the officer's condition is stable at this time.
Details on what precipitated the chase or the identity of the suspect remain undisclosed. Simultaneously, as the detective pursued the suspect, he was hit unintentionally by a patrol car. A Baltimore police foot officer was impacted heavily near York Road and Harwood Avenue by the vehicle, witnessed by onlookers as being a "hard hit" that propelled the officer next to a gas station.
According to a witness statement obtained by WBALTV, Katarina Carlin, "I could hear it and see it." Carlin detailed the frantic moment: "I guess a suspect ran past me, past the cars, into the opposite lane of traffic, and then I saw about six officers or so running through traffic." The suspect was subsequently apprehended, although it is still unclear what led to the foot pursuit.
Following the collision, road closures were implemented in both directions to facilitate the investigation. Carlin, shaken by the event, pulled over and observed other officers calling for medics and surrounding the injured detective. As she told WBALTV, "He goes flying next to the gas station and I pull over because I'm real shaken up, and I see the other three officers huddled around him." Emergency responders later arrived to provide care before escorting the officer to the Shock Trauma facility. Baltimore Police Department's helicopter was also seen canvassing the area shortly after.
This incident highlights the unpredictable and often hazardous circumstances that law enforcement officers frequently face. Investigations into the incident continue as the police seek to understand the complete narrative of what transpired before, during, and after the collision. Further details will be reported as they become available.
