In Bellingham, Massachusetts, an early morning routine patrol took a turn towards the harrowing when a local police officer spotted fire engulfing a house. Around 2:58 a.m. yesterday, Officer Thamiris Ribeiro, while on patrol near Blackstone and Mechanic Streets, noticed flames on the second floor of a residence at 1 Patrick Street. Realizing the pressing danger, Ribeiro quickly called it in and rushed to the aid of the home's single occupant, who was blissfully unaware of the unfolding disaster.
Officer Ribeiro's presence of mind and swift actions were crucial in the successful evacuation of the resident, as reported by the Bellingham MA Police. While Ribeiro tended to the resident, additional officers from the Bellingham Police Department swiftly arrived to support with evacuations, traffic management, and maintaining the security of the scene. The Bellingham Fire Department promptly responded, and, with the help of neighboring fire services, subdued the fire within 45 minutes. There were no injuries reported, though the house sustained severe damage.
The occupant, now safe thanks to the efforts of the first responders, received further support from the American Red Cross. Officer Ribeiro, who joined the police force just last year, was commended by the Bellingham Police Department for her vigilant response along with her midnight shift colleagues. Their collective effort and professionalism not only averted potential tragedy, but they also ensured little disruption to the surrounding community during the incident.
As to what caused the blaze, that detail remains under investigation by the Bellingham Fire Department. They are joined by the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit in their efforts to determine the genesis of this near-catastrophe, as the fire appears to be accidental in nature.
