This morning in Benicia, a man in his 20s was killed after his silver Toyota RAV4 crashed on the westbound Interstate 780 near the Southampton Road onramp, authorities said. The SUV struck a guardrail, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene as emergency crews briefly closed the westbound lanes to investigate and clear the wreckage.
The California Highway Patrol told KRON4 that the solo collision was reported at about 7:45 a.m. The driver was the only person in the vehicle, and all westbound lanes were temporarily shut down while first responders worked the scene. Investigators remained on site to determine exactly what led up to the crash.
Where The Crash Happened
The collision took place on the westbound side of I-780 near the Southampton Road onramp, a heavily traveled connector for commuters heading toward the Benicia-Martinez Bridge. As reported by SFGATE, the Toyota RAV4 hit the guardrail and no other vehicles were involved.
Investigation Under Way
According to KRON4, CHP investigators said unsafe speed appears to be the likely cause of the crash, and the agency is continuing to examine evidence from the scene. Authorities have not yet released the driver's identity, citing the need to notify next of kin and complete any toxicology testing or collision reconstruction work.
Speeding Is A Leading Killer On California Roads
Speed remains a major factor in deadly crashes across California. Recent traffic safety analysis from SafeTREC shows that roughly a third of motor vehicle fatalities in the state in recent years were speeding related, with unsafe speed often listed as the primary crash factor in those cases. SafeTREC provides the data behind that trend.
