A Berkeley food pantry that has quietly kept shelves stocked for more than 50 years is preparing to close for good, after a merger attempt with Berkeley Food Network fell apart and relief plans failed to come together in time. Volunteers say the pantry’s final grocery distribution will be January 30, 2026, with operations winding down immediately after, leaving thousands of regulars wondering where their next bags of groceries will come from.
Official Notice And Closing Timeline
On its website, Berkeley Food Pantry states that it will cease operations after January 31, 2026, with the last day of grocery distribution set for January 30, 2026. The pantry notes that it will keep accepting food and bag donations into late January, but has stopped taking cash, stocks, and planned giving as it prepares to shut down.
Merger Talks Collapse As Demand Surges
In a joint statement, the Berkeley Food Network and the pantry’s oversight committee stated that merger negotiations ended because structural requirements exceeded the capacity of both groups. They pointed to a recent federal shutdown, rising need, and an aging volunteer base as key pressures on the system, according to Berkeleyside.
The pantry logged roughly 47,589 visits this year, up from a previous baseline of 34,778. That roughly 36 percent spike, volunteers and church leaders told Berkeleyside, pushed an already lean operation to the breaking point.
Who Might Fill The Gap
Berkeley Food Network and the Alameda County Community Food Bank are reported to be looking at ways to keep a hole from opening in Berkeley’s safety net once the pantry shuts down, Berkeleyside reported.
According to Berkeley Food Network, the organization already operates a large pantry on 9th Street, along with neighborhood distributions and a bi-weekly home delivery grocery box program for local residents. Those existing programs are among the options being eyed as a short-term patch while service providers regroup.
Volunteers Scramble For A Lifeline
Behind the scenes, volunteers are not quite ready to give up. They told Berkeleyside they are hunting for another church willing to host the pantry, and said one volunteer has even offered to buy space if that is what it takes to keep the doors open somewhere else.
Organizers also described the pantry’s oversight committee as just a small group of volunteers plus the pastor. They told Berkeleyside that scaling up to run a bigger, more complex operation under a merger simply was not realistic with so few people to manage it.
What Residents Should Know Right Now
For now, the pantry will continue to distribute groceries through January 30, 2026. Residents who need food assistance are urged to check Berkeley Food Pantry’s FAQ and calendar for current details, and to look at Berkeley Food Network’s distribution schedule and home delivery sign-up for replacement options.
Berkeley Food Network also directs people to county listings and partner resources for a wider rundown of neighborhood pantries and meal programs, while agencies and volunteers coordinate their next move.
