During a routine traffic stop in Berkeley last Thursday, officers made a notable discovery. The Berkeley Police Department reported that they had pulled over a 38-year-old man from Suisun City at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Allston Way for a traffic violation. According to their reports, the man was found to be driving on a suspended license.
A subsequent search of the vehicle, which had to be towed due to the driver's license status, turned up several boxes of ammunition and a more concerning find. Tucked away in the car was a loaded, unserialized handgun—a type of weapon often referred to as a "ghost gun" for its lack of traceability. These firearms are a growing concern for law enforcement agencies as they can circumvent traditional gun purchase regulations and are untraceable due to having no serial numbers.
In connection with these findings, the suspect was arrested on the spot. The following day, the Berkeley Police Department shared on social media that the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office had charged the man. His charges include possession of an unserialized firearm and driving without a valid license.
