Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, together with NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch, is organizing a gun buyback program. The event will take place tomorrow, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at St. Paul’s Community Baptist Church in East New York. The Brooklyn District Attorney’s office stated that individuals who surrender operable handguns and assault rifles will receive a $500 bank card and a pair of Apple AirPods.
Organizers will provide up to three bank cards per person for surrendered firearms, with a limit of two for ghost or 3D-printed guns. The Brooklyn District Attorney’s office confirmed that the process will be anonymous, and participants will not be required to provide any form of identification.
St. Paul’s Community Baptist Church, established in 1927, will host the event. Rev. Dr. David K. Brawley, the church’s Lead Pastor, said that community participation is important in efforts to reduce violence. The event will provide different compensation amounts for various types of firearms, including $200 for ghost guns and $75 for rifles or shotguns.
The church is accessible, situated near public transit, and will provide free parking for attendees. Local partners, including the Oyate Group, a nonprofit donating the first 100 pairs of AirPods, are assisting with the event. In the past three years, similar buyback events have resulted in the collection of over 600 firearms, demonstrating the ongoing use of these programs to remove guns from the community.
