A fatal stabbing in Brooklyn's Bergen Beach has led to the arrest of the alleged perpetrator, who is accused of killing his father-in-law and seriously injuring his mother-in-law in their home. According to Gothamist, the NYPD responded to a distress call on Thursday night around 7:30 p.m., discovering 49-year-olds Juan Manuel Galicia and his wife, both suffering from multiple stab wounds.
The couple was promptly taken to Brookdale University Hospital where Galicia was pronounced dead while his wife remains in a critical condition. Authorities have charged 35-year-old Albert Torres with attempted murder on Friday, although the precise relationship between Torres and the victims was not immediately confirmed by officials. Police had previously mentioned that they were searching for the couple's son-in-law, indicating a family connection. "There were three homicides and 153 felony assaults in the 63rd Precinct, which includes Bergen Beach and other southeast Brooklyn neighborhoods, this year through Dec. 7," Gothamist reported.
Further details on the incident were given by ABC7NY, which stated that the suspect, after the stabbing, made a chilling phone call to a family member declaring, "I've taken care of your parents." This prompted the family member to alert others, leading to the 911 call. Despite the horrific nature of the crime, local residents expressed their shock, with one neighbor describing Bergen Beach as "usually a quiet, safe neighborhood."
Torres was described as being 5'6" tall, last observed wearing blue pants and a white hooded sweatshirt, and reportedly fled in a blue Toyota SUV. The precise motivation for the attack remains unclear at this point, despite the tragic outcome and the swift police response.
