Early Tuesday morning, a traffic stop in the Gravesend neighborhood of Brooklyn took a dangerous turn when a motorist reversed into two police officers before fleeing the scene. The incident took place near West 8th Street and Quentin Road at approximately 4:40 a.m., according to News 12 Brooklyn. The officers had initially stopped a gray Mercedes C300, but as they exited their patrol car, the driver quickly shifted into reverse, struck both officers, and then escaped westbound on Quentin Road.
Surveillance footage sourced from a local resident's home displayed the startling event, showing the Mercedes hastily reversing, impacting both the officers and their vehicle, before speeding away. In the video, the Mercedes was seen pulling into the intersection as the squad car's lights activated and the officers got out, followed by the rapid retreat of the suspect's vehicle. A portion of the Mercedes, including the front bumper, was found abandoned on the street post-collision. The area, described by a neighbor as a "dead-end corner," was left in disarray as parts of the vehicle scattered the roadway.
Both officers were promptly attended to by emergency medical services and taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries; one officer suffered a minor leg injury, and the other officer sustained an injury to the foot, ABC7NY reports. The police are actively searching for the driver and the gray Mercedes, urging anyone with additional information or video footage from the time of the incident to come forward and contact the authorities.
A neighbor, providing a view into the community sentiment, stated, "Things happen, so I don’t have much reaction, but it’s good that we have the camera," as reported by News 12 Brooklyn. Despite the quick response of law enforcement, no arrests have yet to be made, and the search for the driver continues. Police are hopeful that the surveillance video and any additional evidence from the public will lead to the identification and apprehension of the individual responsible for this brazen act against law enforcement officers.
