A 46-year-old hiker from California was unable to finish the Kukui Trail in Kōke‘e on Sunday due to reported leg injuries and called for help sometime after 3:50 p.m. Kaua‘i Fire Department crews from Līhu‘e Fire Station and Air 1 located him about 1.2 miles in and conducted an aerial extraction, according to the County of Kauai.

He was brought to a landing zone and transferred to Waimea fire station personnel for further evaluation. After being assessed by American Medical Response, he declined additional medical treatment and was released, as reported by the County of Kauai.

Operations ended at about 6:05 p.m. after the Kukui Trail landing zone was cleared of all rescue and emergency personnel. The Kaua‘i Fire Department and other first responders safely carried out the extraction and provided care, as stated by the County of Kauai.
