Customs and Border Protection officers at the Anzalduas International Bridge made a significant seizure recently, intercepting a cache of firearms and ammunition that was being smuggled into Mexico. According to a press release from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the discovery included 30 unreported pistols and 61 magazines, as well as $3,000 in cash suspected to originate from criminal activities.
The find took place on December 3rd, when officers flagged a grey Chevrolet Silverado for a detailed check as it attempted to cross the border. Using nonintrusive inspection technology followed by a physical search, the agents uncovered the concealed weapons and magazines of various calibers. “This significant seizure of weapons illustrates our commitment to continue working toward limiting access to firearms to the criminal element in Mexico,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez in the statement provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The driver of the vehicle was subsequently arrested and faced the consequences of attempting to move illegal contraband across borders. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection transferred the case to Texas DPS officers who then took the individual, along with the seized weapons, currency, and vehicle into custody for further legal processing.
Instances like these highlight the ongoing challenges faced at US borders, where officers diligently work to stem the flow of illegal arms which can exacerbate violence and fuel conflict in neighboring regions.
