
Charlotte authorities are investigating a fatal hit-and-run that killed 56-year-old Howard Charles Pomnitz III. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) reported that the incident occurred last Saturday evening on the 1200 block of North Tryon Street in the Metro Division.
CMPD officers responded to a call around 5:43 p.m. and found Pomnitz unresponsive; MEDIC pronounced him dead at the scene. The vehicle involved, a black Chevrolet Cruze, was seen fleeing north on North Tryon Street, and the driver has not been apprehended. CMPD stated that while speed does not appear to be a factor, it is unclear whether impairment contributed to the incident.
The investigation involved multiple units, including the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, and Motorcycle Unit. Crime Scene Search (CSS) personnel were also deployed to collect physical evidence. The CMPD Public Affairs Division stated that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
The investigation is ongoing as officials await toxicology results. The family of Howard Charles Pomnitz III has been notified.
